Below the hill, beside the river — and a lot of ground-floor flats with their own door.

Locksmith in Untergiesing

Untergiesing lies east of the Isar between the Wittelsbacher and Brudermühl bridges, on the flat ground below the Giesinger Berg. It is smaller, lower and quieter than the districts around it, and the Isar meadows are a two-minute walk from most of it.

One feature affects our work here more than anywhere else: because the ground rises towards the hill, an unusual number of flats are half-basement or ground floor with their own entrance from the street or the yard.

What it costs in Untergiesing

Untergiesing is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Google address check
For address suggestions and — only for addresses in zone 3 — for calculating the road distance, the address you enter is transmitted to Google Ireland Limited. Details are in our privacy policy.

The address decides the zone, and the zone is decided by its postcode. In Munich zones 1 and 2 travel is included; in zone 3 we calculate it from the actual driving distance.

When this price does not apply

  • Security locks of a higher resistance class
  • Multi-point locking (several bolts at once)
  • Security bars or additional locking devices
  • Technically difficult opening: jammed or warped door, broken bolt
  • Replacement parts such as cylinder, mortise lock or escutcheon
  • A situation that turns out to differ from what was described

In these cases our technician quotes the price before starting work, in writing. If you decline, there is no charge.

Where Untergiesing is

Untergiesing runs east of the Isar between the Wittelsbacherbrücke and the Brudermühlbrücke. Kolumbusplatz is the northern reference point, with the Pilgersheimer Straße running through as the main axis. The Schyrenbad, an open-air pool on the river dating from 1902, marks the western edge, and the Humboldtstraße, Kistlerstraße and Untere Grasstraße carry most of the addresses. The Au adjoins to the north, Obergiesing rises to the east up the hill, and Harlaching lies to the south. The district shares an administrative unit with Harlaching, which is a villa quarter and shares nothing else with it.

What the buildings are like

Altbau-Wohnungstür im Treppenhaus, Zylinder und Beschlag erkennbar

Small-scale building mostly from around 1900, three to four storeys and therefore lower than in the inner-city period districts. Buildings of this period were not built with lifts. Because of the slope up to the Giesinger Berg and the proximity to the river, there is an above-average number of half-basement and ground-floor flats with their own entrance from the street or the courtyard — flats that do not have a shared stairwell at all. Cellar entrances are frequently reached across the yard rather than from inside the building. Side and courtyard doors often retain older locking.

Getting to you

Untergiesing is quickly reached across the Isar bridges and by the Pilgersheimer Straße, and lies close to the centre. The streets are narrow, several are one-way, and resident parking pressure is high. The point worth making on the phone is which door: if your flat has its own entrance from the street or the yard, that is not the same address as the building's front door, and describing it saves a technician standing at the wrong one.

What we are usually called for in Untergiesing

  • Half-basement and ground-floor flats with their own entrance from outside
  • Cellar entrances reached across the courtyard rather than from the stairwell
  • Doors that latched shut in period buildings without lifts
  • Side and courtyard doors with older locking
  • Cylinder changes after a lost key in rented flats

Questions from Untergiesing

My flat has its own door onto the street, not through a stairwell. Does that change anything?

Only what you tell us on the phone, and it matters. Untergiesing has an unusual number of half-basement and ground-floor flats with their own entrance, and their doors are frequently older and heavier than a flat door inside a building — sometimes an original house door doing a job it was not designed for. Say which door it is and roughly what it looks like. Otherwise the technician stands at the main entrance while you are twenty metres away.

The cellar is reached from the yard. Can you open that?

Yes, and it is a routine case here. Older buildings in Untergiesing frequently have cellar entrances across the courtyard rather than from inside, often with locks that are as old as the building. They tend to be mechanically simple and open without damage; the usual difficulty is a door that has dropped or a lock that has corroded in a damp yard. If we think something needs replacing, you hear it before we start.

Is Untergiesing the same as Giesing?

Neighbours, not the same place, and locals are clear about it. Giesing proper is up the hill to the east; Untergiesing is the flat ground by the river. They belong to different administrative districts, and the building is noticeably different — lower and smaller here. For us it changes only the route. Give the street and house number and the distinction takes care of itself.
