Everything on this page is a final price. Nothing is added later.

What a locksmith costs in Munich

Three things decide your price: what has happened to the door, when you need us, and how far we drive. Nothing else — no time charge, no separate call-out fee, no surcharge that appears on the invoice for the first time.

This page also explains how the German locksmith market works, because several of its conventions surprise people who did not grow up with them. If you are new to Munich, that part is worth more than the table.

Calculate your price

Three answers and you have your figure. The crawlable price information on this page carries the same numbers — the calculator is the convenient way through it, never its replacement.

1 What happened?
2 When do you need help?
3 Where are you?

Google address check
For address suggestions and — only for addresses in zone 3 — for calculating the road distance, the address you enter is transmitted to Google Ireland Limited. Details are in our privacy policy.

The address decides the zone, and the zone is decided by its postcode. In Munich zones 1 and 2 travel is included; in zone 3 we calculate it from the actual driving distance.

Every amount is a final price including 19 % German VAT. Inside the Munich city boundary travel is included too; outside it, the whole journey from our premises to your door is added by the kilometre. There is no time charge: whether the opening takes five minutes or fifty makes no difference to what you pay.

The time bands

  • Mon–Fri 8 am – 5 pm
  • Mon–Fri 5 pm – 10 pm
  • Mon–Fri 10 pm – 8 am
  • Saturday 8 am – 10 pm
  • Saturday 10 pm – 8 am
  • Sunday
  • Public holiday

Sundays and Bavarian public holidays count as the night rate for the whole day — including a Sunday afternoon. Bavaria has more public holidays than any other German state, and several of them catch newcomers out: 6 January, Corpus Christi in late spring, 15 August in most municipalities, and 1 November.

For a door that is locked with a key, none of this applies. That job costs the same at three in the morning on Christmas Day as it does on a Tuesday afternoon.

What is included

  • Travel to your address
  • Labour on site
  • 19 % VAT
  • No time metering — we do not bill started quarter-hours

When this price does not apply

Six situations, listed openly rather than buried in terms and conditions. If one applies, our technician quotes the new fixed price before starting work.

  • Security locks of a higher resistance class
  • Multi-point locking (several bolts at once)
  • Security bars or additional locking devices
  • Technically difficult opening: jammed or warped door, broken bolt
  • Replacement parts such as cylinder, mortise lock or escutcheon
  • A situation that turns out to differ from what was described

In these cases our technician quotes the price before starting work, in writing. If you decline, there is no charge.

How we calculate travel

From the actual road distance between our premises and your address — not from a flat rate per district, and not as a line item added afterwards.

The reason is that flat rates are wrong in both directions. From a city-centre base, Unterföhring is closer than Aubing even though one is in the district and the other in the city. Within a single municipality the difference can be several kilometres: in Aying or Sauerlach, with their scattered hamlets, considerably more. A flat rate would therefore either overcharge you or be unsustainable for us.

This is also why the calculator asks for a street and house number rather than just a district. If the address cannot be resolved, it says so and points you to the phone. What it will never do is quietly fall back to zero — a travel cost invented at the door is precisely the practice this whole approach exists to avoid.

The three areas

Zone 1 — Munich base zone
The 52 postcodes of the Munich base zone. Travel is fully included in the fixed price.
Zone 2 — Munich outer postal zone
The 25 postcodes of the Munich outer postal zone. Travel is fully included in the fixed price.
Zone 3 — Munich district
The 31 served postcodes in the Munich district, up to 50 kilometres by road. Travel is added here — calculated over the whole journey from our starting point to your address, not merely the part outside Munich.

Which zone applies is decided by the postcode of the address. 52 postcodes make up the base zone, 25 the outer zone, 31 the served part of the surrounding district. All three lists are set out in full below, so you can look yours up rather than take the calculator's word for it.

A postcode follows no ring road and no city boundary. The three zones are a pricing decision, not a map: they say what travel costs, not where Munich ends.

If your address is in zone 3, travel is added at 1,50 € for every kilometre of the journey — the whole route by road from our premises to your door, not merely the part outside Munich. The zone decides whether travel is charged, not where the counting starts. Twenty kilometres therefore comes to 30 € on top of the base price. We do not drive further than 50 kilometres — past that the calculator names no price and asks you to call instead.

Which postcode belongs to which zone

Which zone an address belongs to is decided by its postcode — not by a line on a map. The three lists are below in full, so you can look yours up before the calculator tells you.

Two of the district postcodes are shared with municipalities we do not serve — 82152 also covers Krailling and 82131 also covers Gauting, both in the Starnberg district. For those, the calculator checks the town name as well and asks you to call rather than name a price it cannot stand behind.

How the German locksmith market works

Some of what follows is obvious to anyone who grew up here and genuinely useful to everybody else. None of it is specific to us.

Are the prices gross or net?

Gross. Every price you see on this website is what you actually pay — 19 % German VAT (Mehrwertsteuer) is already included, and so is travel.

This matters more than it sounds. In several countries, and in German business-to-business quotes, prices are quoted net and tax is added at the end. For consumers in Germany the law requires the final price to be shown, so a figure advertised to private customers should already include VAT. If a provider quotes you a number and the invoice is 19 % higher, that was not a legitimate net quote — that was a bad-faith one.

What does "Festpreis" actually mean?

Festpreis means fixed price: the amount is agreed before the work starts and does not change afterwards. The word is used by almost every locksmith in Munich, which unfortunately means it has stopped distinguishing anyone.

What separates a real fixed price from the advertised kind is what it excludes. Ask two questions: does the price include travel, and is there a time charge? Many providers advertise a fixed price for the labour, then add a call-out fee, then bill extra per started quarter-hour beyond a certain point. Each of those is legal if disclosed. Together they mean the number you were told is not the number you pay.

Our fixed price includes travel and VAT and has no time component. If your door turns out to be one of the six documented exceptions, we tell you the new price before starting, and you can decline at no cost.

When do surcharges apply?

Three time bands, and they are the same across the industry even where the amounts differ. Weekdays 8:00 to 18:00 is the standard rate. Weekday evenings and Saturdays cost more. Nights from 22:00 to 8:00, all of Sunday and public holidays cost most.

Sunday is a full-rate day in Germany, not a half-day. This surprises people from countries where Sunday trading is normal — but German shops are closed, and emergency trades charge accordingly.

German public holidays are partly federal and partly by state. Bavaria has more of them than any other German state, including several that exist nowhere else: Heilige Drei Könige on 6 January, Fronleichnam in late spring, Mariä Himmelfahrt on 15 August in most Bavarian municipalities, and Allerheiligen on 1 November. If you are new here, these are the days you did not know were holidays until the supermarket was shut.

Why do I have to show ID?

Because otherwise we would be helping people into flats that are not theirs. Every reputable locksmith in Germany checks this, and a provider who does not is a warning sign rather than a convenience.

What we normally need is photo ID showing that address — a German Personalausweis or a residence permit card usually does. If your ID shows a different address, or you are a recent arrival, a document connecting you to the flat works too: a tenancy agreement, a Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate), or post addressed to you there.

If all of it is inside the flat, say so when you call. That situation is common and there are other ways to establish who you are. What we cannot do is skip the check because it is inconvenient.

Who are the Hausmeister and the Hausverwaltung?

Two roles worth knowing before you pay anyone, because either may be able to let you in for free.

The Hausmeister is the caretaker for the building — maintenance, bins, the boiler, sometimes the garden. Many hold a key to the main entrance, and in some buildings to individual flats. If your building has one and it is a reasonable hour, ask them first.

The Hausverwaltung is the property management company that administers the building on behalf of the owner. Their contact details are usually posted in the entrance hall. In larger buildings they hold spare keys or can authorise an opening. If you rent, they are also the ones who decide about a cylinder change after a lost key.

We tell you this knowing it may cost us the job. It costs less than the review you would leave after paying for something a phone call would have solved.

Keys and locks when you move into a German flat

How do locksmith scams work in Germany?

The German pattern is specific enough to recognise, and it starts with the advertisement rather than the invoice: a headline price that cannot be real — "ab 28 €", "ab 29 €" — a dispatched subcontractor who has no relationship with the company you rang, and a total assembled on your doorstep out of call-out charges, time charges and a supplement for a "security lock" that turns out to be an ordinary cylinder.

What protects you is boring and effective: ask for the total on the phone including travel and VAT, ask for the company address, and ask whether the person coming works for them. Any real business answers all three without hesitation.

The full pattern, the four checks you can make before calling, and what your options are if you have already paid, are set out in our guide.

Locksmith scams in Germany — the pattern, and what to do

What if the bill is far higher than agreed?

You have more protection than most people realise, and German courts have taken this seriously for years.

Exploiting somebody's emergency to demand a grossly excessive amount is Wucher — profiteering — and it is a criminal offence, not merely a contractual dispute. The Federal Court of Justice confirmed a conviction on exactly this basis (case 1 StR 113/19), and lower courts have repeatedly ruled excessive locksmith invoices immoral and therefore void.

Practically: pay nothing you have not agreed to, ask for a written invoice with the company's full address and the VAT shown, take photographs of the door and the invoice, and note the time. If you have already paid under pressure, the Verbraucherzentrale — the German consumer advice centre — can tell you whether the amount is recoverable. There is one in Munich and it advises in English by arrangement.

None of this helps at 3 a.m. while you are standing in a stairwell, which is exactly why the price belongs in the conversation before anyone sets off.

How can I pay?

Cash, girocard or Apple Pay, directly to the technician on site.

A note on girocard, because it confuses almost everyone who moves here: it is the German domestic debit scheme, and it is what most German bank cards actually run on. It is not Visa or Mastercard, and many smaller German businesses accept girocard while declining international credit cards. If your card was issued outside Germany, mention it on the phone and we will confirm what works.

You get an invoice without having to ask for it, with our full address and the VAT shown separately. That matters if you intend to claim the cost from insurance or a landlord.

What others in Munich charge

Researched figures with their sources, so you can check our position rather than take our word for it. We are not the cheapest, and the table shows why the cheapest numbers are not what they appear to be.

Provider Daytime Nights, weekends, holidays What the figure leaves out
ADAC roadside-assistance locksmith adac.de, as of August 2026 119 € 199 € Plus €20 for every started quarter-hour beyond minute 30, and a €40 cancellation fee. ID required. Apartment building entrance doors and garages are explicitly excluded. Waiting times of up to 60 minutes. The ADAC is Germany's automobile club and among the most trusted brands in the country — but it dispatches contractors rather than employing the technician who arrives.
Local Munich providers (several) Published prices of several Munich providers, August 2026 55 € 85–98 € That figure normally applies to a latched door on a weekday during business hours. What is added for a locked door, a security cylinder or the journey is usually not stated.
Advertised entry prices online Advertisements and landing pages, August 2026 ab 28–29 € not stated An amount at this level does not cover a technician driving across Munich, never mind the work. In practice it is the opening line of a different invoice.

What independent bodies say

ADAC (editorial)
Typical market rates are €80 to €150 on weekdays during the day and €150 to €250 at night, at weekends and on public holidays. Surcharges of 50 to 100 % outside regular hours are considered normal.
German consumer advice centres
Daytime charges should not exceed €100 to €150. Demands from €300 upwards for a simple daytime opening are treated as a warning sign.
Federal Court of Justice
Exploiting a customer's emergency to demand excessive sums constitutes Wucher — profiteering — and is a criminal offence (case 1 StR 113/19). Courts have repeatedly ruled excessive locksmith invoices immoral and therefore void.

Where the extra money usually hides

Six mechanisms, all of them legal if disclosed, all of them routinely not disclosed. Each one below is followed by how we handle it — which is the only part you should take on trust rather than verify.

Time charging

Beyond a certain minute, every started quarter-hour is billed on top. A €119 entry price becomes €180 or more on a difficult door.

We do not charge for time. Whether the opening takes five minutes or fifty makes no difference to the price.

Separate call-out fee

The advertised price covers the labour; the journey is added on top, often only visible on the invoice.

Travel is inside the quoted final price and calculated from the actual driving distance, not a flat rate per district.

Cancellation fee

Decline the work after the technician has arrived and you still pay. The ADAC charges €40.

Within the first ten minutes of arrival, declining costs you nothing.

"From" prices without conditions

The lowest price applies to the simplest case at the cheapest time. Which surcharge applies when is rarely stated alongside it.

You see the full matrix of situation, time band and travel — and work out your own case yourself.

No address

Without a servable address in the imprint, a dispute has nobody on the other end. With dispatch platforms this is the norm rather than the exception.

We have premises in Munich you can visit during business hours. The address is in the imprint and in the footer of every page.

Pressure to pay cash

Accepting only cash makes the transaction harder to trace — and takes advantage of how difficult it is to argue at night.

Cash, girocard or Apple Pay. You get an invoice without asking, with VAT shown separately.

What speaks against us

A page that lists only advantages reads like every other advertising page, and gets believed accordingly.

  • We are not the cheapest locksmith in Munich. If you are comparing entry prices alone, you will find lower numbers — they just rarely survive contact with the invoice.
  • We do not quote a fixed price for electrically operated garage doors in the calculator. We could not calculate one honestly without knowing the installation.
  • Our standard price does not cover high-resistance security locks and multi-point locking. What does apply, you learn before work starts.
  • We open apartment building entrance doors only against proof of entitlement. Without it you do not get an appointment from us, however inconvenient that is at the time.

Questions about prices

What does a locksmith cost in Munich?

It depends on three things: what has happened to the door, when you need us, and how far we have to drive. A door that latched shut is the simplest and cheapest case; a door locked with a key takes considerably more work. Nights, Sundays and public holidays cost more. Travel is calculated from the actual driving distance rather than a flat rate per district. You get the final figure before work starts, in writing, including 19 % VAT.

Is travel included in the price?

In Munich zones 1 and 2, yes — travel is fully part of the quoted price and is not added afterwards. In zone 3, the surrounding district, it is added at 1.50 € for every kilometre of the journey — the whole route by road from our premises to your address, not merely the stretch beyond the boundary. Twenty kilometres therefore comes to 30.00 €. Not as the crow flies, not by postcode, and not as a flat rate per municipality: two addresses in the same village can be several kilometres apart, and a flat rate would either overcharge you or be unsustainable for us. The calculator shows the amount as its own line before you call.

What does it cost at night?

For a door that has latched shut, nights between 22:00 and 8:00, all day Sunday and public holidays carry our highest rate; the calculator shows which band applies before you call. For a door locked with a key there is no night rate at all — that job costs the same at three in the morning as on a Tuesday afternoon. What never gets added is a time charge: providers who bill per started quarter-hour beyond a certain point end up well above their advertised entry price.

Do the prices include VAT?

Yes. Every figure on this website includes 19 % German VAT (Mehrwertsteuer), and in Munich zones 1 and 2 it includes travel as well. This is worth stating because it is not universal: business quotes in Germany are often net, and several countries advertise pre-tax prices to consumers too. The one thing that can still be added is the journey to an address outside the city, which the calculator shows as its own line.

When does the price change?

In six documented situations, all of them listed openly on the price page: high-resistance security locks, multi-point locking, additional security fittings such as a Panzerriegel, mechanically obstructed openings where the door is jammed or warped, cases needing replacement parts, and cases where the situation on site differs from what was described on the phone. If one applies, our technician quotes the new fixed price before starting. If you decline, there is no charge.

How do I recognise a dubious locksmith?

Four things, and they are visible before anyone arrives. An advertised price far below what a technician driving across Munich could cost. No business address in the imprint — meaning no one to take a dispute to. Refusal to name a total on the phone including travel and VAT. And pressure to pay cash while declining card. Any one of these is worth a second call to somebody else; two together is answer enough.
