Old working-class Munich, on a hill, with tenancies that change often.
Locksmith in Giesing
Giesing lies southeast of the centre on the east side of the Isar, climbing the slope known as the Giesinger Berg. It was a working-class district for most of its history and still has the building stock to show for it: small flats, narrow stairwells, and very few lifts.
It is also one of the districts where flats change hands most often, which makes the cylinder change after a move the most frequent planned job we do here.
What it costs in Giesing
Giesing is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Where Giesing is
Giesing sits southeast of the inner city, east of the Isar. The Giesinger Berg with the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche is the landmark, and the Tegernseer Landstraße runs through as the main axis. Silberhornstraße, Schlierseestraße, Werinherstraße, Deisenhofener Straße and Chiemgaustraße carry most of the addresses. To the south lies Fasangarten with the former McGraw Barracks — a US Army site until the 1990s, since converted. Untergiesing adjoins to the north and Ramersdorf to the east. Officially the district is called Obergiesing-Fasangarten; in conversation it is simply Giesing, and the older part on the hill is what people mean by it.
What the buildings are like
Foto folgt

Around the Giesinger Berg and along the Tegernseer Landstraße, mostly tenement buildings from the founding years and slightly later, four to five storeys and generally without a lift. The small flats of the old working-class district are characteristic, though a great many have been combined or refurbished over the years. Further east and south the picture changes to post-war estates, where lifts are more common and flats sit on central locking systems. Cellar compartments in the older buildings on the hill are narrow and low, and reached by steep stairs.
Getting to you
Giesing is reached by the Tegernseer Landstraße, the Mittlerer Ring and the Isar bridges. Parking is tight around the Giesinger Berg and along the main axis and considerably easier in the post-war areas further out. The slope is the thing worth mentioning: several streets on the hill are steep and narrow, and the entrance to a building is not always on the street its address names. The house number and the floor are what help most.
What we are usually called for in Giesing
- Doors that latched shut in period buildings with no lift
- Cylinder changes on tenant turnover, frequent in this district
- Flats in post-war estates with cylinders on a central locking system
- Narrow, low cellar compartments in the older buildings on the hill
- Building entrance doors with old and stiff hardware

Questions from Giesing
I am moving in and want the lock changed. What should I check first?
Whether the flat door belongs to a central locking system. In the post-war estates here it usually does, which means one key opens the building entrance as well as your door — and a standalone replacement cylinder would leave you unable to get in downstairs. That change runs through the Hausverwaltung. In the older buildings on the hill the flat cylinder is normally yours to change, but keep the original to reinstate when you move out.
My key has been getting harder to turn. Should I do something?
Yes, before it strands you. A stiffening cylinder is a cylinder taking more force than it was built for, and the usual end of that story is a key snapping off in the lock — reliably at the worst moment. Do not use oil: it collects dust and makes it worse within weeks. A lock spray with graphite or PTFE may buy time; if it has gone past that, replacing the cylinder as planned work costs far less than an emergency call-out for the same thing.
Is Obergiesing the same as Giesing?
For our purposes, yes. The administrative district is Obergiesing-Fasangarten, and there is also an Untergiesing further north with its own identity. In conversation, Giesing means the part on and around the hill. Give us the street and house number and the naming question does not arise — it only matters for the travel component, which is calculated from the actual distance to your address rather than from a district name.
And the questions that are the same everywhere
- Do you actually speak English? Yes. By phone or on WhatsApp — writing is often easier than a call in a second language. Full answer
- What does a locksmith cost in Munich? It depends on the situation, the time and the driving distance. You get the final figure in writing before work starts. Full answer
- Is travel included in the price? Inside Munich, yes. Beyond it, 1.50 € for every kilometre of the whole journey from our premises — not just the part outside the city. Full answer
- Will I have to prove who I am? Yes. Photo ID with that address, or ID plus a document linking you to it. If it is all inside, say so when you call. Full answer
