Small, low, close to the river — and easily confused with Haidhausen.

Locksmith in the Au

The Au lies east of the Isar, just south of Haidhausen. It is one of the older parts of Munich and one of the least altered: smaller houses, narrower streets, and a scale that feels closer to a village than to a city district a few minutes from the centre.

Its landmark is the Mariahilfplatz, where the Auer Dult — a fair and flea market with roots in the eighteenth century — is held three times a year. That matters to us for one practical reason: for those weeks the square and its surroundings are largely inaccessible by vehicle.

What it costs in Au

Au is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Google address check
For address suggestions and — only for addresses in zone 3 — for calculating the road distance, the address you enter is transmitted to Google Ireland Limited. Details are in our privacy policy.

The address decides the zone, and the zone is decided by its postcode. In Munich zones 1 and 2 travel is included; in zone 3 we calculate it from the actual driving distance.

When this price does not apply

  • Security locks of a higher resistance class
  • Multi-point locking (several bolts at once)
  • Security bars or additional locking devices
  • Technically difficult opening: jammed or warped door, broken bolt
  • Replacement parts such as cylinder, mortise lock or escutcheon
  • A situation that turns out to differ from what was described

In these cases our technician quotes the price before starting work, in writing. If you decline, there is no charge.

Where Au is

The Au runs east of the Isar, south of Haidhausen and north of Untergiesing. Mariahilfplatz with the Mariahilfkirche is the central reference point. Ohlmüllerstraße, Lilienstraße and Hochstraße carry most of the addresses, and the Zeppelinstraße follows the river. The Auer Mühlbach, a mill stream branching off the Isar, still runs through the quarter — partly open, partly culverted — and explains why some of the street layout does not follow a grid. The Au shares an administrative district with Haidhausen, and the two names get used interchangeably by people who do not live here, though the character is distinctly different.

What the buildings are like

Altbau-Wohnungstür im Treppenhaus, Zylinder und Beschlag erkennbar

Small-scale building with a high proportion of houses from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, interspersed with post-war building and individual newer houses. Most are three to four storeys, lower than in Haidhausen, and lifts are rare. Characteristic of the quarter are the courtyards behind the street frontage, several still holding workshops and small businesses with their original locking — doors that have been in use for a century and were never designed to be opened by anyone but their owner. Cellar doors and side entrances are often original and prone to jamming as the buildings settle.

Getting to you

The Au is quickly reached across the Isar bridges and lies close to the centre. Its streets are narrow, several are one-way, and resident parking pressure is high. The Auer Dult is the local complication: three times a year, for roughly a week each, the Mariahilfplatz and the streets around it are given over to the fair and are effectively closed to traffic. If that is where you are during those weeks, we will give you a more cautious estimate on the phone and keep it.

What we are usually called for in Au

  • Flat doors in older tenement buildings whose cylinders have been changed repeatedly
  • Workshop and storage doors in courtyards with original locking
  • Cellar doors and side entrances that have jammed
  • Doors that latched shut in the smaller post-war flats
  • Building entrance doors with old hardware that has become stiff

Questions from Au

Is the Au the same as Haidhausen?

They share an administrative district and nothing else. Haidhausen is north, larger, and built up in grander style; the Au is south, lower, and small-scale. People who live here are quite clear about the difference, and addresses in one are not in the other. For us it matters only for the route — give the street and house number and the question does not arise.

There is a fair on the Mariahilfplatz. Can you still reach me?

Yes, but not by the direct route and not as quickly. The Auer Dult takes over the square and the surrounding streets three times a year, for about a week each time in spring, summer and autumn. During those periods the area is closed to traffic and the diversions are substantial. We will tell you a realistic time for your specific address rather than the usual one, and we would rather do that on the phone than leave you waiting.

The door to my workshop in the courtyard is very old. Can it still be opened without damage?

Often yes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. Courtyard workshops in the Au frequently still have their original locks, which are mechanically simpler than modern cylinders and correspondingly straightforward to open — the difficulty is usually corrosion or a door that has dropped rather than the lock itself. Where we think something will have to be replaced, you hear it before we start. Send a photograph on WhatsApp if you can; on a door of that age it tells us more than a description.
