East of the river, and the quarter people move to when they stop wanting Schwabing.
Locksmith in Haidhausen
Haidhausen sits east of the Isar between the Maximilianeum and Ostbahnhof. If you have heard it called the French Quarter, that is the northern part around Bordeauxplatz, where the streets are named after French cities and the buildings are almost uniformly pre-war.
It is one of the more internationally mixed parts of the city and one of the more confusing to navigate at night, because several of its oldest streets are narrow, curved and poorly lit.
What it costs in Haidhausen
Haidhausen is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Where Haidhausen is
Haidhausen lies east of the Isar, between the Maximilianeum on the river and Ostbahnhof on its eastern edge. The northern part is the Franzosenviertel — the French Quarter — around Bordeauxplatz, Pariser Straße and Wörthstraße, so called because the streets carry French city names. West of that is Wiener Platz with its small permanent market and the Innere Wiener Straße running down to the river. South lie Preysingstraße and Kirchenstraße, some of the oldest and narrowest streets in the district. Ostbahnhof at the eastern end is a main-line station and a substantial transport hub, and the area immediately around it has been rebuilt in the last two decades with modern residential blocks. Administratively Haidhausen shares a city district with the Au to the south, but nobody uses the combined name in conversation.
What the buildings are like

Mostly pre-war apartment buildings, particularly dense in the French Quarter, with courtyards and the usual arrangement of a street-facing building and sometimes a rear one. Interspersed among them, and specific to Haidhausen, are the Herbergen: very small, low two-storey cottages built for workers in the nineteenth century, several still standing around Preysingstraße and Kirchenstraße. Their doors are narrow and low, and their layouts are nothing like a standard flat. Near Ostbahnhof the picture changes completely: modern residential blocks with entrance systems where one key serves flat, building door and bin store. Along the Innere Wiener Straße the ground floors are shops and restaurants, so commercial doors and rear entrances through the yard are part of the mix.
Getting to you
Haidhausen is reached across the Isar bridges from the centre, or along Rosenheimer Straße, and the approach stays quick outside rush hour. Inside the district it becomes slower than the map suggests: the streets around Preysingstraße and the French Quarter are narrow, one-way in places and heavily parked, and resident permits apply throughout. Around Ostbahnhof, evening events at the venues nearby can make the immediate area difficult. The house number is essential here rather than helpful — several streets curve enough that a landmark description does not narrow it down.
What we are usually called for in Haidhausen
- Flat doors in pre-war buildings of the French Quarter, often several floors up
- Herbergen and very small houses with low, sometimes historic doors
- Building entrance doors on the newer blocks near Ostbahnhof, with one key for everything
- Shop and restaurant doors along the Innere Wiener Straße
- Cellar compartments in older apartment houses, reached by a separate stair

Questions from Haidhausen
What is a Herberge, and does it change anything?
It is a very small nineteenth-century workers' cottage, two storeys, built in rows — several survive around Preysingstraße and Kirchenstraße and they are one of the things that make Haidhausen distinctive. For a lockout they matter because the doors are narrower and lower than a standard flat door, and the layout behind them is not what a technician would assume. Mention it on the phone, or send a photograph on WhatsApp; it takes five seconds and avoids surprises at the door.
One key opens my flat, the building door and the bin store. Is that normal?
Yes, and it is worth understanding what it means. That arrangement is a Zentralschließanlage — a central locking system, standard in newer German apartment buildings, including many around Ostbahnhof. Your key opens the shared doors and only your own flat. The consequence is that losing it is a building-wide matter rather than a personal one, and the cylinder cannot simply be swapped for one bought separately. That decision runs through the Hausverwaltung.
The streets here confuse my satnav. What should I give you?
Street and house number, and the floor. Several streets in the older part of Haidhausen curve or change character along their length, so "near Wiener Platz" narrows things down far less than it feels like it does. If the entrance is through a courtyard or there is a second staircase, say that too. Sending the address in writing on WhatsApp removes any spelling problem, which with Munich street names is not a small thing.
And the questions that are the same everywhere
- Do you actually speak English? Yes. By phone or on WhatsApp — writing is often easier than a call in a second language. Full answer
- What does a locksmith cost in Munich? It depends on the situation, the time and the driving distance. You get the final figure in writing before work starts. Full answer
- Is travel included in the price? Inside Munich, yes. Beyond it, 1.50 € for every kilometre of the whole journey from our premises — not just the part outside the city. Full answer
- Will I have to prove who I am? Yes. Photo ID with that address, or ID plus a document linking you to it. If it is all inside, say so when you call. Full answer
