Central, quiet, and full of buildings older than the lift.

Locksmith in the Lehel

The Lehel sits between the old town and the Isar, with the Englischer Garten closing it off to the north. It is one of the most central addresses in Munich and one of the quietest — a district of embassies, chambers, practices and expensive flats rather than nightlife.

Almost everything here was built between 1870 and 1910, which has one practical consequence worth knowing before you rent: many of these buildings never had a lift fitted.

What it costs in Lehel

Lehel is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Google address check
For address suggestions and — only for addresses in zone 3 — for calculating the road distance, the address you enter is transmitted to Google Ireland Limited. Details are in our privacy policy.

The address decides the zone, and the zone is decided by its postcode. In Munich zones 1 and 2 travel is included; in zone 3 we calculate it from the actual driving distance.

When this price does not apply

  • Security locks of a higher resistance class
  • Multi-point locking (several bolts at once)
  • Security bars or additional locking devices
  • Technically difficult opening: jammed or warped door, broken bolt
  • Replacement parts such as cylinder, mortise lock or escutcheon
  • A situation that turns out to differ from what was described

In these cases our technician quotes the price before starting work, in writing. If you decline, there is no charge.

Where Lehel is

The Lehel runs between the Altstadtring in the west and the Isar in the east, bounded to the north by the Englischer Garten. Sankt-Anna-Platz with its two churches is the point people navigate by; Thierschstraße and Steinsdorfstraße run through the middle, and Widenmayerstraße follows the river with what are among the most sought-after addresses in the city. The Maximilianstraße forms the southern edge, lined with commercial buildings and the state parliament at its far end. The Praterinsel and the museum quarter around the Deutsches Museum adjoin directly. Administratively the Lehel shares a district with the old town, but it feels like a separate place and is treated as one.

What the buildings are like

Altbau-Wohnungstür im Treppenhaus, Zylinder und Beschlag erkennbar

Closed perimeter blocks from the founding years, largely built between 1870 and 1910 and extensively refurbished over recent decades. Four and five storeys with high ceilings, and frequently no lift retrofitted — a top-floor flat means stairs. Building entrance doors are often double-leaf with historic hardware, while the flat doors behind them have generally been upgraded with modern cylinders at some point. A notable share of the ground and first floors is occupied by law firms, medical practices and offices, which brings its own access arrangements inside an otherwise residential building. Cellar compartments and attic storage are reached by separate stairs and are usually secured more simply than the flats.

Getting to you

The Lehel is a few minutes from the old town and among the quickest areas for us to reach. Its streets are wider than in the old town, but resident permits apply throughout and parking pressure is high, particularly along the river and around Sankt-Anna-Platz. What helps most is the house number together with the floor and, where relevant, the name on the door — in a building that mixes flats with chambers and practices, the entrance you need is not always the obvious one.

What we are usually called for in Lehel

  • Flat doors in refurbished period buildings with modern cylinders fitted later
  • Chambers and practice doors with their own access arrangements inside a residential building
  • Double-leaf building entrance doors with historic hardware
  • Lost keys in buildings on a central locking system, where a cylinder change costs more
  • Cellar and attic compartments, usually secured more simply than the flat

Questions from Lehel

My building has an old double door at the entrance. Is that a problem?

Not usually, but it is worth mentioning on the phone. Many entrance doors in the Lehel are original double-leaf doors with period hardware, sometimes under heritage protection. The visible part is often the historically valuable part while the working lock is modern, so opening through the cylinder is normally straightforward. Where we think damage might be unavoidable, you hear that before anything is touched rather than afterwards.

I run a practice here. Can you come outside office hours?

Yes — around the clock, and outside regular hours costs more, which the price list shows openly. Two things speed it up: tell us it is a commercial door rather than a flat, and bring something showing you may open the premises, such as a lease or ID matching the name on the door. If this happens more than once, a standing arrangement is worth more than a call-out each time.

I live on the fourth floor with no lift. Does that affect the price?

No. We do not charge for stairs, and there is no time component in the price at all — whether the job takes five minutes or fifty makes no difference to what you pay. The floor matters for one thing only: tell us, so the technician brings the right equipment up in one trip rather than two.
