The university quarter — which shapes almost everything about the doors here.

Locksmith in the Maxvorstadt

The Maxvorstadt sits directly north of the old town and contains both universities, the museum quarter around Barer Straße, and a very large number of shared flats. If you are here as a student, a researcher or on a short academic contract, this is probably your postcode.

That has a practical consequence: tenancies turn over constantly, keys circulate, and more people lock themselves out here on a Friday night than in most of the city.

What it costs in Maxvorstadt

Maxvorstadt is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Google address check
For address suggestions and — only for addresses in zone 3 — for calculating the road distance, the address you enter is transmitted to Google Ireland Limited. Details are in our privacy policy.

The address decides the zone, and the zone is decided by its postcode. In Munich zones 1 and 2 travel is included; in zone 3 we calculate it from the actual driving distance.

When this price does not apply

  • Security locks of a higher resistance class
  • Multi-point locking (several bolts at once)
  • Security bars or additional locking devices
  • Technically difficult opening: jammed or warped door, broken bolt
  • Replacement parts such as cylinder, mortise lock or escutcheon
  • A situation that turns out to differ from what was described

In these cases our technician quotes the price before starting work, in writing. If you decline, there is no charge.

Where Maxvorstadt is

The Maxvorstadt runs from Königsplatz in the west to Ludwigstraße in the east, with the old town immediately south and Schwabing to the north. Schellingstraße and Türkenstraße are the streets people actually name when giving directions — cafés, bookshops, and the edge of the LMU campus. Barer Straße carries the Kunstareal, the cluster of art museums that includes the three Pinakotheken. Königsplatz at the western end is the neoclassical square used for open-air concerts in summer. Further north, around Josephsplatz and Augustenstraße, the quarter turns quieter and more residential. Both major universities, the LMU and the Technical University, have their central buildings within walking distance of each other here, which is the single fact that explains the character of the district.

What the buildings are like

Pre-war apartment buildings dominate, laid out in blocks around courtyards, with ground floors given over to shops, cafés and small offices. Flats are frequently large and shared, which is why one door may have four or five people holding keys to it. Rear buildings reached through a courtyard passage are common, as are cellar compartments approached by a second staircase in the yard. Around the university there is a mix of institute premises and student housing with managed access systems, where a lost key is administered by the institution rather than by the resident. Post-war and modern infill exists but is the exception rather than the rule.

Getting to you

The Maxvorstadt is close to the city centre and quick to reach at any hour, with Ludwigstraße and Brienner Straße as the main approaches. Parking is the constraint rather than the distance: resident-permit territory throughout, and the streets around the university stay congested well into the evening. Give the full street and house number, and mention whether the flat is in the street-facing building or a rear block. If the address belongs to a university institute or a hall of residence rather than a private tenancy, say so on the phone — access to those runs through the institution, and we would only be sending you back to them.

What we are usually called for in Maxvorstadt

  • Shared-flat doors that latched shut, most often in the evening or at the weekend
  • Rear-block flats reached only through the inner courtyard
  • Cylinder changes when a room in a shared flat changes hands
  • Cellar compartments approached by a second staircase in the yard
  • Large pre-war flats with security hardware retrofitted at some point

Questions from Maxvorstadt

I live in university housing. Can you let me in?

Usually not, and it is worth knowing why before paying for a call-out. Halls of residence and institute buildings normally run managed access systems, where the keys belong to the institution and only it can authorise an opening. Contact the porter, the caretaker or the housing office first — most halls have an out-of-hours number for exactly this. A private tenancy in an ordinary building is a different matter, and there we come.

I am subletting a room. Does that change anything?

It changes what you need to show us. Before opening any door we check that you are entitled to enter, and a sublet is perfectly acceptable — but a name on a bell panel is not proof, because anyone can read a bell panel. A written sublet agreement, post addressed to you there, or the main tenant confirming by phone all work. Sublets are common in the Maxvorstadt, so this is a routine conversation rather than an awkward one.

Is it cheaper during the day?

Yes, noticeably. Weekdays between 8:00 and 18:00 carry the standard rate; evenings and Saturdays cost more; nights, Sundays and public holidays cost most. That is why a planned cylinder change belongs in business hours rather than at two in the morning. For an actual lockout you obviously call when it happens — but the price list shows the difference openly rather than burying it.
