Locksmith in Schwabing

Schwabing runs north from the Maxvorstadt along both sides of Leopoldstraße, and for a lot of people arriving in Munich it is the first address they know by name. The Englischer Garten is on its eastern edge, the university a short walk south, and Münchner Freiheit the point everybody navigates by.

It is also a district of tall pre-war apartment buildings without lifts, which matters more than it sounds when you are standing on a fourth-floor landing without your keys.

What it costs in Schwabing

Schwabing is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Google address check
For address suggestions and — only for addresses in zone 3 — for calculating the road distance, the address you enter is transmitted to Google Ireland Limited. Details are in our privacy policy.

The address decides the zone, and the zone is decided by its postcode. In Munich zones 1 and 2 travel is included; in zone 3 we calculate it from the actual driving distance.

When this price does not apply

  • Security locks of a higher resistance class
  • Multi-point locking (several bolts at once)
  • Security bars or additional locking devices
  • Technically difficult opening: jammed or warped door, broken bolt
  • Replacement parts such as cylinder, mortise lock or escutcheon
  • A situation that turns out to differ from what was described

In these cases our technician quotes the price before starting work, in writing. If you decline, there is no charge.

Where Schwabing is

Schwabing stretches north from the Maxvorstadt on both sides of Leopoldstraße, the wide avenue running from the Siegestor up towards Münchner Freiheit. Münchner Freiheit itself is the practical centre: U-Bahn, trams, cafés, and the point most people give when describing where they live. Elisabethplatz with its small daily market sits to the west, Kurfürstenplatz and Hohenzollernplatz further out along Hohenzollernstraße, which is the shopping street rather than Leopoldstraße. The Englischer Garten forms the eastern boundary. Administratively Schwabing is split between two city districts, Schwabing-West and Schwabing-Freimann, which is why postcodes here jump around — and why nobody local uses the official names.

What the buildings are like

Predominantly turn-of-the-century apartment buildings, four or five storeys, arranged around courtyards. Most went up before lifts were standard, so a top-floor flat means stairs: worth knowing before you sign a lease, and worth remembering when you call a locksmith at night. Ceilings are high, flats are often large and frequently shared, and the front doors are correspondingly heavy. Behind the street-facing buildings there are commonly rear blocks reached through a passage and an inner courtyard, which affects how easily an address can be found in the dark. Cellar compartments belong to the flat and are reached by a separate stair; they tend to be secured more simply than the flat door itself. Post-war and modern infill exists, mostly towards Freimann and along the wider roads.

Getting to you

Schwabing is straightforward to reach from the city centre along Leopoldstraße or Ludwigstraße, and those routes stay quick at night. What is not straightforward is parking: the whole core is resident-permit territory, and finding a space near Münchner Freiheit or in the side streets off Hohenzollernstraße can take longer than the drive. Two things genuinely help us. Give the full street and house number rather than the nearest landmark, and say whether the flat is in the street-facing building or a rear block reached through the courtyard — Vorderhaus or Hinterhaus, in the words you will see on the letterboxes.

What we are usually called for in Schwabing

  • Flat doors that latched shut on the third or fourth floor, with no lift
  • Rear-block flats reached through a courtyard passage, hard to find in the dark
  • Cylinder changes when a shared flat changes occupants
  • Heavy building entrance doors with older hardware that has jammed
  • Cellar compartments, usually secured more simply than the flat itself

Questions from Schwabing

My flat is in a rear building. Will you find it?

Yes, but tell us when you call. A great many addresses in Schwabing have a Vorderhaus on the street and a Hinterhaus reached through a passage and a courtyard, sometimes with its own staircase and letterboxes. The house number is the same for both. Saying "rear building, second staircase, third floor" saves several minutes of standing in a dark courtyard, and at night that is worth more than it sounds.

A flatmate moved out and kept a key. What now?

A cylinder change is the straightforward answer, and it is planned work rather than an emergency — so book it during business hours and it costs less. Two things to check first. If you rent, the flat door cylinder is normally yours to change, but keep the original to reinstate when the tenancy ends. And if the same key opens the building entrance, that door belongs to the whole building and is not yours to change; that one goes through the Hausverwaltung.

Do you cover all of Schwabing, including towards Freimann?

Yes. Schwabing sits across two administrative districts, and that boundary means nothing for us. What does change slightly is the travel component of the price, because it comes from the actual road distance rather than a flat rate per district. An address by Münchner Freiheit and one out towards Studentenstadt are genuinely different journeys, and the calculator prices them as such.
