Where we are based — and where getting a van to the door is the actual problem.
Locksmith in Munich's old town
The Altstadt is the historic centre inside the ring road, the part of Munich most visitors see and rather fewer people live in. Marienplatz, the Viktualienmarkt, Sendlinger Tor and Odeonsplatz are all within it, and so are a great many offices, practices and shops above and behind the shopfronts.
This is also where we are based. That does not make us faster here in the way you might expect — the limiting factor in the old town is almost never distance, it is getting a vehicle close to the door.
What it costs in Altstadt
Altstadt is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Where Altstadt is
The Altstadt occupies the area within the Altstadtring, the road following the line of the medieval walls, and is traditionally divided into four quarters: Graggenau, Angerviertel, Hackenviertel and Kreuzviertel. Marienplatz with the town hall is the centre; the Viktualienmarkt lies just southeast of it; Sendlinger Straße runs southwest towards Sendlinger Tor, and Odeonsplatz marks the northern edge where Ludwigstraße begins. Sankt-Jakobs-Platz and the Rindermarkt are quieter reference points a street away from the crowds. Residential addresses here are mixed in among commercial ones, often on the upper floors of buildings whose ground floors are shops — so a single address may contain a retailer, two offices and three flats, each with different access.
What the buildings are like

Almost everything is mixed use, and that is the defining feature. Ground floors are retail and restaurants with tubular frame doors and roller shutters; upper floors hold offices, practices, chambers and flats, many in buildings that have been renovated repeatedly. Security hardware is generally more substantial than in residential districts, because there is more behind the doors, and buildings under heritage protection often carry modern locking behind an original-looking door. Central locking systems are common, so one key may serve the street door, a stairwell door and one flat or office. Behind the shopfronts there are service passages, courtyards, cellar hatches and display cases, all of which have their own locks and their own ways of failing.
Getting to you
This is the nearest area to us and the least predictable to reach, which is not a contradiction. The pedestrian zone can only be entered by vehicle at certain times of day, the Altstadtring is heavily congested for much of the day, and the streets inside it are narrow with almost no parking. In practice the last part of the journey is often on foot with tools. What that means for you: at busy times an address here can take longer than one further out, and we would rather say so on the phone than let you assume otherwise. Give the street and house number and, if it is an office or a shop, the name on the door and the floor.
What we are usually called for in Altstadt
- Shop doors with tubular frame locks that will not open before opening time
- Office and practice doors on upper floors of commercial buildings
- Flat doors in renovated old buildings with retrofitted security hardware
- Building entrance doors on central locking systems after a key goes missing
- Display cases, side entrances and cellar accesses in mixed-use buildings

Questions from Altstadt
You are based here. Does that make you faster?
Not as much as it sounds, and it would be easy to claim otherwise. In the old town the constraint is access rather than distance: the pedestrian zone is closed to vehicles for much of the day, the ring road is congested, and there is essentially nowhere to park. The last stretch is frequently on foot. We tell you a realistic time on the phone for the specific address rather than a figure based on the map.
My shop will not open and customers are waiting. What can you do?
Tubular frame locks on shop doors are a routine case and usually open without damage. Two things speed it up: tell us it is a commercial door with a narrow frame, and say whether there is a roller shutter and whether it is up or down. And bring proof that you may open the premises — a lease, a business registration, or ID matching the name on the door. For a shop that is normally to hand, unlike in a domestic lockout.
The building is listed. Will you damage anything?
It is a fair question here and the answer shapes how we work. Heritage-protected buildings in the old town frequently have modern locking behind original-looking doors and fittings, so the visible part is often the historically valuable part and the working part is not. We open through the cylinder wherever possible and tell you beforehand if we think damage is unavoidable — on a listed door that conversation happens before anything is touched, not after.
And the questions that are the same everywhere
- Do you actually speak English? Yes. By phone or on WhatsApp — writing is often easier than a call in a second language. Full answer
- What does a locksmith cost in Munich? It depends on the situation, the time and the driving distance. You get the final figure in writing before work starts. Full answer
- Is travel included in the price? Inside Munich, yes. Beyond it, 1.50 € for every kilometre of the whole journey from our premises — not just the part outside the city. Full answer
- Will I have to prove who I am? Yes. Photo ID with that address, or ID plus a document linking you to it. If it is all inside, say so when you call. Full answer
