Gärtnerplatz and Glockenbach — where a locked-out night is genuinely a night thing.
Locksmith in the Isarvorstadt
The Isarvorstadt is the district south of the old town running down to the river, and you have almost certainly heard its two informal names rather than its official one: the Gärtnerplatzviertel around the square of the same name, and the Glockenbachviertel just southwest of it.
It has more bars and restaurants per street than anywhere else in Munich, which shows up in our work in a specific way: this is the quarter where doors are most often found latched shut somewhere between one and four in the morning.
What it costs in Isarvorstadt
Isarvorstadt is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Where Isarvorstadt is
The Isarvorstadt runs south from Sendlinger Tor down to the Isar. The Gärtnerplatzviertel is arranged around Gärtnerplatz itself, with Reichenbachstraße and Klenzestraße leading off it. Southwest of that lies the Glockenbachviertel, along Müllerstraße, Hans-Sachs-Straße and Baaderstraße — this is the part with the highest concentration of bars, cafés and small shops, and the part most people mean when they say they live in Glockenbach. Fraunhoferstraße is the main axis and has its own U-Bahn station. Further south, near the river, is the quieter Dreimühlenviertel. Officially the district is combined with the Ludwigsvorstadt around the main station into one administrative unit, but the two halves have little in common and nobody treats them as the same place.
What the buildings are like

Pre-war apartment buildings almost throughout, four to five storeys, arranged around courtyards, with commercial ground floors on the busier streets. Buildings of this period were not built with lifts, so an upper-floor flat may well mean stairs. Flats are frequently shared or sublet, and turnover is high — a great many people pass through this quarter for a year or two. Behind the street buildings there are rear blocks and inner courtyards, and the cellars are often extensive and irregular, with compartments reached through more than one door. On the commercial side, restaurant and shop entrances frequently have roller shutters, and staff access often runs through a rear door off the courtyard rather than the front.
Getting to you
The Isarvorstadt is very close to the city centre and quick to reach at any hour. Parking is the difficulty: resident permits apply across the district, and on Friday and Saturday nights the streets around Gärtnerplatz and Müllerstraße are effectively full. That is worth knowing because it is also when most lockouts here happen. Give the street and house number rather than the nearest bar, mention the floor, and say whether the entrance is on the street or through the courtyard. If you are outside a restaurant or shop rather than a flat, say which door — front or the one off the yard.
What we are usually called for in Isarvorstadt
- Flat doors latched shut late at night, after an evening out
- Upper-floor flats in buildings without a lift
- Cylinder changes on tenant turnover, which is frequent here
- Restaurant and shop doors, including rear staff entrances off the courtyard
- Cellar compartments in irregular older cellars with more than one door

Questions from Isarvorstadt
I have come home at three in the morning and the door has shut behind me. Is that more expensive?
The time of day is, yes — nights between 22:00 and 8:00 carry the highest rate, and that is true of every trade in Germany. The situation itself is the cheapest there is: a door that merely latched shut is held only by the spring latch and can usually be opened in under a minute without a mark on it. You get the full figure on the phone before anyone sets off, so there is no discovery at the door.
It is my restaurant, not my flat. Can you come?
Yes, and commercial doors here are a routine part of the work. Two things help. Tell us which door — the street entrance with the roller shutter, or the staff door off the courtyard, because they are usually completely different locks. And bring something showing you are entitled to open the premises: a lease, a business registration, or ID matching the name on the door. Regular openings are worth an arrangement in advance rather than a call-out each time.
I am subletting for a few months. Will you still open the door?
Yes, provided you can show you belong there. A written sublet agreement is ideal; post addressed to you at that address works; the main tenant confirming by phone works. What does not work on its own is a name on the bell panel, because anyone can read one. Short tenancies and sublets are ordinary in this quarter, so the question comes up constantly and is nothing unusual.
And the questions that are the same everywhere
- Do you actually speak English? Yes. By phone or on WhatsApp — writing is often easier than a call in a second language. Full answer
- What does a locksmith cost in Munich? It depends on the situation, the time and the driving distance. You get the final figure in writing before work starts. Full answer
- Is travel included in the price? Inside Munich, yes. Beyond it, 1.50 € for every kilometre of the whole journey from our premises — not just the part outside the city. Full answer
- Will I have to prove who I am? Yes. Photo ID with that address, or ID plus a document linking you to it. If it is all inside, say so when you call. Full answer
