Thalkirchen sits on the Isar between Sendling to the north and Solln to the south. The Hellabrunn zoo occupies a large area by the river, and the Flaucher — the widened, gravel-banked stretch of the Isar — adjoins it. The old village centre gathers around the church of St. Maria Thalkirchen. To the north and west, residential building from the 1950s to the 1970s, mostly three to five storeys, some with lifts. Newer terraced rows with garages exist at the edges. Because of the proximity to the river, cellar doors here suffer more from damp than elsewhere and stiffen accordingly.
