Two building eras side by side — and cellars a long walk from the flat.

Locksmith in Sendling

Sendling lies south of the centre on the west bank of the Isar. It is a working residential district rather than a destination, which is why it stays affordable by Munich standards and why a lot of people end up here after their first year in the city.

It also has more housing cooperatives and large post-war estates than the inner districts, and those bring a specific quirk: your cellar compartment may be in a different building from your flat.

What it costs in Sendling

Sendling is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Google address check
For address suggestions and — only for addresses in zone 3 — for calculating the road distance, the address you enter is transmitted to Google Ireland Limited. Details are in our privacy policy.

The address decides the zone, and the zone is decided by its postcode. In Munich zones 1 and 2 travel is included; in zone 3 we calculate it from the actual driving distance.

When this price does not apply

  • Security locks of a higher resistance class
  • Multi-point locking (several bolts at once)
  • Security bars or additional locking devices
  • Technically difficult opening: jammed or warped door, broken bolt
  • Replacement parts such as cylinder, mortise lock or escutcheon
  • A situation that turns out to differ from what was described

In these cases our technician quotes the price before starting work, in writing. If you decline, there is no charge.

Where Sendling is

Sendling sits south of the inner city, west of the Isar. Gotzinger Platz is the practical centre, with the Plinganserstraße running through as the main axis and the Großmarkthalle — Munich's wholesale market, one of the largest in Europe — occupying a substantial site on the Thalkirchner Straße. Lindwurmstraße, Implerstraße and Daiserstraße carry most of the remaining addresses. The Ludwigsvorstadt adjoins to the north, the Isar and its water meadows to the east, Sendling-Westpark to the west and Thalkirchen to the south. The district is larger than it feels, and the character changes noticeably from the older streets near the river to the estates further west.

What the buildings are like

Tenement buildings from around 1900 at the core, interspersed with large housing developments and cooperative estates from the 1950s to the 1970s. In the post-war buildings lifts are frequently present, though often very small — worth knowing if you are moving furniture rather than just keys. The estates were laid out with cellar compartments grouped centrally rather than under each staircase, so a compartment can be several buildings away from the flat it belongs to. Around the Großmarkthalle the picture changes again: storage buildings, workshops and commercial premises with correspondingly robust doors and roller shutters.

Getting to you

Sendling is well connected by the Plinganserstraße and the Mittlerer Ring. Parking is noticeably easier than in the districts nearer the centre, and the housing estates generally have visitor spaces. In the commercial area around the Großmarkthalle, access is straightforward outside the early morning, when market traffic dominates. The one thing that genuinely helps is the building number within an estate: several of them run to a dozen entrances that look identical from the road.

What we are usually called for in Sendling

  • Flats in cooperative estates whose cellar compartments are in another building
  • Storage, workshop and commercial doors around the Großmarkthalle
  • Period flats near the Isar with cylinders fitted later
  • Building entrance doors on locking systems in the estates
  • Doors that latched shut in post-war buildings with very small lifts

Questions from Sendling

My cellar compartment is in a different building. Whose door is that?

Still yours to use, but not yours to change — and that distinction matters. In the estates here, cellar compartments were often grouped centrally rather than placed under each staircase, so the route to yours may run through another building's entrance. Both that entrance and your compartment usually belong to the same locking system, administered by the Hausverwaltung or the cooperative. We can open it for you against the usual proof; replacing a cylinder there goes through them.

I have a workshop near the Großmarkthalle. Do you do commercial doors?

Yes, and the doors around the market are a routine part of the work. Two things speed it up: say whether it is the main door, a roller shutter or a side entrance, because they are usually completely different locks. And bring something showing you may open the premises — a lease, a business registration, or ID matching the name on the door. If it happens more than once, a standing arrangement costs less than repeated call-outs.

Is Sendling cheaper to reach than the city centre?

Sometimes, and the calculator will tell you rather than a rule of thumb. Travel is worked out from the actual road distance to your address, so a flat near the Isar and one out towards Westpark are priced as the different journeys they are. What does not change is the rest of the price: the situation and the time of day, both of which are the same wherever you are.

And the questions that are the same everywhere
