Officially Schwanthalerhöhe. Nobody calls it that.

Locksmith in the Westend

The Westend lies west of the Theresienwiese, between the railway lines and the Landsberger Straße. Its official name is Schwanthalerhöhe, which you will see on maps and almost nowhere else — everyone, including the estate agents, says Westend.

It was built as a workers' district in the decades around 1900 and still looks like one: dense blocks, narrow stairwells, and very few lifts.

What it costs in Westend

Westend is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Google address check
For address suggestions and — only for addresses in zone 3 — for calculating the road distance, the address you enter is transmitted to Google Ireland Limited. Details are in our privacy policy.

The address decides the zone, and the zone is decided by its postcode. In Munich zones 1 and 2 travel is included; in zone 3 we calculate it from the actual driving distance.

When this price does not apply

  • Security locks of a higher resistance class
  • Multi-point locking (several bolts at once)
  • Security bars or additional locking devices
  • Technically difficult opening: jammed or warped door, broken bolt
  • Replacement parts such as cylinder, mortise lock or escutcheon
  • A situation that turns out to differ from what was described

In these cases our technician quotes the price before starting work, in writing. If you decline, there is no charge.

Where Westend is

The Westend sits west of the Theresienwiese, bounded by the railway to the north and the Landsberger Straße. Gollierplatz and Georg-Freundorfer-Platz are the two squares people navigate by, with Westendstraße running through as the main axis. Ganghoferstraße, Kazmairstraße, Bergmannstraße and Parkstraße carry most of the residential addresses. To the northwest lies the site of the former trade fair, now redeveloped and home to the transport museum; to the east, the Theresienwiese. The district is compact enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes, which is part of why it has held together as a neighbourhood.

What the buildings are like

Dense perimeter blocks, and the building history is unusually legible here. The eastern part is dominated by tenement buildings in the neo-Renaissance style from roughly 1882 to 1889; the western part by German Renaissance and Art Nouveau from 1901 to 1924. Alongside them stand a large number of housing cooperative buildings from the same period, many still cooperatively owned. Lifts are rare. Stairwells and doorways are narrower than in the grander districts, and the flats behind them are smaller. Cellars are correspondingly tight and low, with compartments partitioned by wooden slats rather than solid walls.

Getting to you

The Westend is reached by the Landsberger Straße and the Ganghoferstraße and is quick to get to at most hours. Resident permits apply throughout and parking pressure is high — a free space directly outside the building is a matter of luck during the day. During the Oktoberfest the eastern part near the Theresienwiese fills up further and access can be slow. Give the house number and the floor; several of the streets here run for a long way and look much the same along their length.

What we are usually called for in Westend

  • Flat doors that latched shut on the third or fourth floor, with no lift
  • Narrow period doors in cooperative housing
  • Cellar compartments in tight, low period cellars
  • Building entrance doors that have become stiff as the building settled
  • Cylinder changes after a lost key in rented flats

Questions from Westend

I live in a Genossenschaft flat. Does that change anything?

For the opening itself, no. For what happens afterwards, sometimes. A housing cooperative owns the building collectively and its members hold shares rather than tenancies in the ordinary sense — which means the building entrance and often the flat cylinder belong to the cooperative rather than to you. If a cylinder needs replacing, that decision usually runs through the cooperative office. Ask them before ordering anything; they may also hold a spare key.

Why is it called Westend if the district is Schwanthalerhöhe?

Schwanthalerhöhe is the administrative name, after the sculptor whose studio stood on the hill. Westend is what the district has been called by the people living in it for well over a century, and it is what appears on shop fronts, in flat listings and in conversation. Both refer to exactly the same place. We use the name people actually search for, which is also the one you will hear if you ask a neighbour.

The building door has become very hard to open. Is that urgent?

Worth acting on before it fails rather than after. Many buildings here are well over a century old and have settled, which pushes the door out of true and makes the lock take force it was not designed for. The usual end of that story is a key snapping off — for whoever happens to be holding it. Since the entrance is shared, this is a matter for the Hausverwaltung or the cooperative rather than for you alone. Report it in writing.
