Martinsried belongs to Planegg — and brings researchers from everywhere with it.
Locksmith in Planegg
Planegg lies west of Munich on the river Würm. The name may be unfamiliar; the name of its southern district usually is not. Martinsried is one of Europe's larger biotech clusters, with Max Planck institutes, university faculties and a long list of companies on a campus with its own U-Bahn station.
The result is a municipality where a quiet Bavarian main village and a highly international research site share one postcode — and where a great many people are living on contracts of a year or two.
What it costs in Planegg
Planegg is in zone 3, the surrounding district, so travel is added to the opening — calculated over the whole journey by road from our premises to your address, not from the boundary onwards and not as a flat rate for the municipality. Within a single municipality the routes often differ by several kilometres, so a flat rate would either overcharge you or be unsustainable for us. The calculator shows the amount as its own line.

Where Planegg is
Planegg sits west of Munich along the Würm. The main village, with the church of St. Elisabeth and the S-Bahn station, is central; Steinkirchen lies to the north and Martinsried to the south. Martinsried carries the biotech and research campus — Max Planck institutes, faculties of the LMU, and a dense cluster of life science companies — spread across its own area with a U-Bahn terminus. The main routes are Bahnhofstraße, Pasinger Straße and, in Martinsried, Fraunhoferstraße. Gräfelfing adjoins to the north and Neuried to the east; beyond the campus the Würm valley continues south. The distances between the three parts are real rather than nominal.
What the buildings are like

In the main village and Steinkirchen, detached and semi-detached houses on generous plots, mostly from the 1950s to the 1980s, with individual villas and newer building among them. Near the station there are apartment buildings and smaller developments on locking systems. Martinsried is different in kind: research, laboratory and office buildings with sophisticated access control, including airlocks, transponders and laboratory containment areas. Those are not accessible to an outside locksmith, and we say so. At the edge of the campus stand apartments and housing for students and visiting researchers, centrally administered and with correspondingly frequent changes of occupant.
Getting to you
Planegg is reached by the A96 and the Würmtalstraße. The main village and Steinkirchen are straightforward. On the campus in Martinsried, finding a specific address without an institute or company name is genuinely difficult: the buildings are spread out and identified by the organisation inside them rather than by street numbers. Parking is unproblematic in the residential areas and tight on the campus at peak times. Give the institute or company name alongside the street, and the distances within the municipality mean the travel component differs noticeably between the main village and the campus.
What we are usually called for in Planegg
- Front doors of detached houses in Planegg and Steinkirchen
- Apartments and visiting-researcher accommodation at the campus edge
- Cylinder changes on the frequent turnover of short-term tenancies
- Flats in the developments near the station
- Garages and garden gates on larger plots

Questions from Planegg
I cannot get into my laboratory in Martinsried. Can you help?
No, and this is one of the clearer cases. Research and laboratory buildings run access control systems with transponders, airlocks and containment areas that carry their own regulations — some of them statutory. An outside locksmith has no business opening them and could not do so legitimately. Contact your institute's facility management or the site security desk. Your flat is a different matter entirely, and there we come.
I am a visiting researcher in accommodation arranged by the institute. What proof do you need?
Something connecting you to the address, and on a short contract that is easier than it sounds. An accommodation agreement, a letter from the institute confirming where you are housed, post addressed to you there, or your registration certificate if you have completed the Anmeldung. This situation is routine in Martinsried, so say what you have when you call and we will tell you immediately whether it is enough.
Is Martinsried the same as Planegg for pricing?
Same municipality, different journey — and the price follows the journey. Travel is calculated from the actual road distance to your address rather than from a flat rate for the whole of Planegg, and there are several kilometres between the main village and the campus. Enter the street and house number in the calculator and you get the figure that will appear on the invoice.
And the questions that are the same everywhere
- Do you actually speak English? Yes. By phone or on WhatsApp — writing is often easier than a call in a second language. Full answer
- What does a locksmith cost in Munich? It depends on the situation, the time and the driving distance. You get the final figure in writing before work starts. Full answer
- Is travel included in the price? Inside Munich, yes. Beyond it, 1.50 € for every kilometre of the whole journey from our premises — not just the part outside the city. Full answer
- Will I have to prove who I am? Yes. Photo ID with that address, or ID plus a document linking you to it. If it is all inside, say so when you call. Full answer
