Built on a former airport — and everything here is on a locking system.
Locksmith in the Messestadt Riem
The Messestadt Riem stands on the site of Munich's old airport, which closed in 1992 when the current one opened. The whole district was built from about 1997 onwards, which makes it the newest place we cover and the most consistent in how its doors work.
That consistency matters: essentially every flat is on a central locking system, with one key for the entrance, the flat, the cellar and the underground garage. There is almost no older building stock to complicate it.
What it costs in Messestadt Riem
Messestadt Riem is in one of the Munich zones, which means travel is fully included in the fixed price — neither as a flat rate nor by the kilometre. What decides the price is which kind of opening it is and, for a door that has simply latched shut, what time it is.

Where Messestadt Riem is
The Messestadt Riem sits at the eastern edge of the city on the grounds of the former Munich-Riem airport. The Riem Arcaden shopping centre and Willy-Brandt-Platz form the centre, with the Riemer Park and its bathing lake to the south — a landscape park laid out for the 2005 federal garden show. Residential building runs north and south along the Willy-Brandt-Allee and the Erika-Cremer-Straße. The trade fair grounds adjoin to the east, and the historic village of Riem lies to the south. The district shares an administrative unit with Trudering, which is a district of houses and has nothing structurally in common with it.
What the buildings are like

Neubau-Wohnungstür mit modernem Beschlag und Anlagenzylinder
New building throughout from about 1997, predominantly four to six storey perimeter blocks around planted courtyards, with individual terraced rows and point blocks among them. Every building has a lift and an underground garage. Where a building is on a central locking system, one key opens the entrance, the flat, the cellar compartment and the garage, sometimes with a transponder for the garage door. That is worth establishing before a cylinder is replaced. Because the district was planned as a whole, the layouts repeat — which makes addresses easy to describe and entrances easy to confuse.
Getting to you
The Messestadt is very well connected by the motorway and the Willy-Brandt-Allee, and the streets are wide and clearly laid out. Parking is unproblematic. The one drawback is the position at the eastern edge of the city, which makes the journey from the centre longer than for inner districts — the travel component reflects that, calculated from the actual road distance rather than a flat rate. During large trade fairs the roads around the exhibition grounds carry heavy traffic and journeys take longer; we will say so on the phone rather than after.

Questions from Messestadt Riem
My transponder for the garage has stopped working. Is that a locksmith job?
Usually not, and it is worth knowing before you call anyone. Transponders are managed electronically by the building administration: they can be deactivated, run out of battery, or simply lose their programming. Replacing or reprogramming one runs through the Hausverwaltung or the system provider, not through us. What we can do is get you through a mechanical door. If the garage has no mechanical alternative, the administration is the only route.
Can I just have a new cylinder fitted if I lose my key?
Not here. Every flat door in the Messestadt is part of a central locking system, so a cylinder bought separately would not work with the building entrance, the cellar or the garage — and would leave you worse off than before. A replacement has to be ordered against the existing locking plan, which runs through the building administration. Tell them the day you lose the key rather than the week after; the exposure is building-wide, not personal.
The buildings all look the same. What should I give you?
Building number, entrance, floor. The district was planned as a single scheme, so the blocks repeat by design and an address alone can point at several identical-looking entrances. Adding which side of the courtyard you are on helps too. This is the one place we cover where a description of the building is genuinely useless and a number is genuinely essential.
And the questions that are the same everywhere
- Do you actually speak English? Yes. By phone or on WhatsApp — writing is often easier than a call in a second language. Full answer
- What does a locksmith cost in Munich? It depends on the situation, the time and the driving distance. You get the final figure in writing before work starts. Full answer
- Is travel included in the price? Inside Munich, yes. Beyond it, 1.50 € for every kilometre of the whole journey from our premises — not just the part outside the city. Full answer
- Will I have to prove who I am? Yes. Photo ID with that address, or ID plus a document linking you to it. If it is all inside, say so when you call. Full answer
