The research campus north of Munich — and one of the most international addresses in Bavaria.
Locksmith in Garching
Garching lies north of Munich on the A9, and most people who know the name know it for the research campus: the Technical University's science faculties, several Max Planck institutes, the research reactor with its distinctive shape, and its own U-Bahn station at the end of the line.
The campus draws researchers and students from everywhere, many on contracts of a year or two, living in furnished flats and hall rooms. That produces a very specific pattern of work — and a set of questions about access that ordinary residential districts do not raise.
What it costs in Garching
Garching is in zone 3, the surrounding district, so travel is added to the opening — calculated over the whole journey by road from our premises to your address, not from the boundary onwards and not as a flat rate for the municipality. Within a single municipality the routes often differ by several kilometres, so a flat rate would either overcharge you or be unsustainable for us. The calculator shows the amount as its own line.

Where Garching is
Garching is a town in its own right north of Munich, reached along the A9. The research campus lies north of the town centre and has its own U-Bahn station, Garching-Forschungszentrum, at the end of the U6. On it are faculties of the Technical University of Munich, several Max Planck institutes and the research reactor. The town centre itself is a separate place a few kilometres south, arranged around the church of St. Katharina and the Bürgerplatz, and looks like what it is — a Bavarian town rather than a campus. Further south again, at the Munich city boundary, lies Hochbrück, an industrial and commercial area with its own U-Bahn stop. Dirnismaning is a small outlying settlement. The distances between these parts are real: several kilometres separate Hochbrück from the campus.
What the buildings are like

Three separate characters within one municipality. On and around the campus: institute buildings with managed access control — transponders, turnstiles, security zones — which are not accessible to an outside locksmith, and residential blocks for students and visiting researchers with centrally administered locking and frequent changes of occupant. In the town centre: detached and semi-detached houses, mostly later twentieth century, alongside apartment buildings with entrance systems. In Hochbrück: commercial and industrial premises with halls, roller shutter doors and commercial locking. Furnished short-term flats are common across the residential parts, which means keys are often held by a landlord, an institute or an agency rather than by the person living there.
Getting to you
Garching is easy to reach from Munich, with most of the journey on the A9. What matters more than the approach is the distance within the municipality: from Hochbrück in the south to the campus in the north is several kilometres, so "in Garching" covers journeys that differ noticeably in length. This is precisely why we calculate travel from the actual road distance to your address rather than applying one figure to the whole town. Parking is not a problem anywhere here. On the campus, finding a specific building is: they are named after institutes rather than numbered along streets, so give the institute or building name as well as the street.
What we are usually called for in Garching
- Flats and hall rooms in the residential blocks around the campus
- Cylinder changes on the frequent turnover of short-term tenancies
- Commercial, hall and office doors in Hochbrück
- Front doors of houses in the town centre and in Dirnismaning
- Flats in buildings with central locking systems

Questions from Garching
I cannot get into my laboratory or institute building. Can you help?
No, and it is better to say that plainly than to drive out and tell you at the door. Campus buildings run managed access control systems — transponders, security zones, in some cases restricted areas with their own regulations. An outside locksmith has no business opening them, and could not do so legitimately even if it were technically possible. Contact your institute's facility management or the campus security desk; both have out-of-hours arrangements for exactly this. If you are locked out of your flat rather than your workplace, that is a different matter and we come.
I am a visiting researcher in a furnished flat. What proof do you need?
Something linking you to that address, which is easier than it sounds even on a short contract. A tenancy or accommodation agreement, a letter from the institute confirming where you are housed, post addressed to you there, or your registration certificate if you have done the Anmeldung. What is not enough on its own is a name on a bell panel. Say on the phone what you have — this is a routine situation in Garching and there is nearly always a workable answer.
Does it cost more because Garching is outside the city?
It depends on the distance rather than on the boundary, which is the point of calculating travel from the actual road distance. Garching is further out than most city districts, so the travel component is higher than for an address in Schwabing — but a journey to Hochbrück in the south of the municipality is meaningfully shorter than one to the campus in the north, and the calculator distinguishes them. You get the total before anyone sets off, and there is no separate call-out charge added afterwards.
And the questions that are the same everywhere
- Do you actually speak English? Yes. By phone or on WhatsApp — writing is often easier than a call in a second language. Full answer
- What does a locksmith cost in Munich? It depends on the situation, the time and the driving distance. You get the final figure in writing before work starts. Full answer
- Is travel included in the price? Inside Munich, yes. Beyond it, 1.50 € for every kilometre of the whole journey from our premises — not just the part outside the city. Full answer
- Will I have to prove who I am? Yes. Photo ID with that address, or ID plus a document linking you to it. If it is all inside, say so when you call. Full answer
